SPARK was conceived in the US over 20 years ago, initially to address the specific needs of physical fitness and lifelong wellness among children. In 1989, a team of highly experienced researchers and educators from San Diego State University were commissioned to create, implement and evaluate an elementary sport and fitness program that could eventually become a nationwide model.
SPARK is a research-based, public health organization dedicated to creating, implementing, and evaluating programs that promote lifelong wellness. SPARK strives to improve the health of children and adolescents by disseminating evidence-based physical activity and nutrition programs that provide curriculum, staff development, follow-up support, and equipment to teachers. SPARK believes in fostering a positive working environment that values professional growth, upward mobility, and opportunities for people to work together toward common goals
The success of Project SPARK (Sports, Play and Active Recreation for Kids), has generated widespread awareness and resulted in the program being implemented in over 1,000 schools across 30 countries. By bringing about the SPARK association, Leapstart intends to deliver the same degree of relevance and success within the Indian education system.
